Busy January
January 25th, 2010The concert for the “Hearty Souls” class at Scottsdale Bible Church was a huge success. I appreciate the efforts of Chantal Harkenrider (who has been acting as my booking agent) for setting this up for me. Not only was the message of the gospel presented, but I was blessed financially which was an answer to prayer! These people are always very nice to me.
I was surprised but not discouraged by the turnout at Pinal County Jail last Friday. Only 4 men attended the first class. That was one less than last week. I was told that many of the men were sick. However, the time I had with those four men was indeed a blessing as we were able to have almost a “one-on-one” discussion of the lesson on Denial. Since there were only four, I had each of them give a brief description of their life and what brought them to jail. That created a rapport that I believe is just as important as drawing out big numbers. It was also a tough lesson in that I anticipated a bigger turnout because of “me.” I have to realize that it’s not about “me” but the drawing of the Holy Spirit. When self gets involved, it creates a hindrance to the Spirit. So, after an honest self-evaluation, I approached the second class with the proper attitude and was rewarded with 14 men…one more than last week! These guys really enjoy the worship and are very attentive and respectful. Most of them are awaiting deportation to various countries. The first four men include 2 former Hindus.
The Phoenix Dream Center class continues to be well attended with nearly 60 men and women. They always want me to do more singing and love to worship. These are former felons, homeless, and addicts who have entered the program and most of them have made decisions for Christ. But I teach that making a “decision” is nothing if it is not followed with affirmative action. This is a common problem in this type of ministry…lots of decisions but no discipleship. The changes that are being implemented at the Dream Center hopefully will address this issue more precisely.
I had the privilege of being invited to participate in the “Waking up America” conference held in Scottsdale at the Double-Tree Resort. The keynote speaker was Dr. David Hocking who is a foremost authority on the current condition of our nation in regards to our Christian heritage or lack thereof. It was well attended with nearly 250 men and women concerned about where our government is taking us. I sang a song I had written, “One Nation under God” and another written by Joel Weldon entitled “Lord, Give Us America.” The next one is scheduled in Tucson on May 15. More information can be found at www.WakingUpAmerica.net I believe this is a vital outreach to the restoration of America to the Judeo-Christian values this country was founded on.
Last evening I did a 90 minute concert at Arizona State Prison / Phoenix West DUI complex to about 80 men. It was a great evening and it looks as if God is opening a door for me to conduct Celebrate Recovery there on Tuesday nights. I led those men in the sinners prayer at the end and most (if not all) said it with me. I asked them to notify the Chaplain (Leonard Grammer) if they had made that decision for the first time. Hopefully he will pass on some good news to me.
I received word that I’m on the list of Platform Guests to attend the Champions for Life Weekend in Huntsville, TX, March 4-6. Praise God! He’s good ALL THE TIME!
